BAYELSA UNITED FC

Bayelsa United FC, based in Yenagoa in southern Nigeria, is one of the four teams that won promotion from the Nigeria National League 2012, winning “Division D”. Bayelsa United FC won the Nigeria Premier League in 2008-2009 but was sensationally relegated the following season.

According to the official homepage of the Nigeria National League, the club scored 24 goals in 16 matches. I have found the scorers of 22 of these goals.

Emmanuel Fabiyi (born 09.10.1985), who has played for the Benin national football team, is a brilliant goalkeeper, formerly of Enyimba FC.

Tarilaye Nwankwe is a true legend in the central defence of Bayelsa United FC. Apparently, Nwankwe has been with the club since 2000, often being named as team captain. Nwankwe scored one league goal during the season. Onyebuchi Chukwuma is another important player in central defence. Chukwuma, most likely born in 1981, has plenty of top level experience and is a former player of Enyimba FC and Sharks FC.

Job Ayuba is an interesting defender or midfielder who was part of the Nigeria U-20 national football team in 2011. Ayuba scored two goals during the season. Jonathan Zikiye, another defender, was also picked for Nigeria U-20 during 2011.

Attacking midfielder Lucky Omeruo, the brother of Kenneth Omeruo (Chelsea FC, England), scored two goals during the season and was picked for the Nigeria U-20 national football team. Omeruo is obviously a player to watch.

Odili Iyasele is an interesting left-winger who was part of the Nigeria U-20 national football team back in 2004, making it likely that he is born in 1985 or 1986. Iyasele, who scored four goals during the season, is perhaps most known for his stint at Ocean Boys FC. Martins Okpose, who was part of the title-winning team in 2008-2009, is often found on the right-wing. Okpose scored two league goals during the season.

Top scorer for Bayelsa United FC was the rather experienced centre-forward Diri Otimoti with eight goals. Otimoti played for Niger Tornadoes FC last season. Peter Ebimobowei, a talented striker who scored once during the season, was a trialist at SK Brann (Norway) in January 2012. According to Norwegian media, Ebimobowei was 18 years old at the time. The picture is of Ebimobowei and was found on mobil.ba.no.

Other key players include Cyril Edum (one goal during the season) and Tunde Adeboye.

AKWA STARLETS FC

Akwa Starlets FC is based in Uyo in south-eastern Nigeria. The club has a strong connection to top level side Akwa United FC and several players at Starlets have also played for United.

According to http://www.nigerianationalleague.com/, Akwa Starlets FC ended the season as number 3 of 9 teams in “Division C” of the Nigeria National League 2012. I know that Akwa Starlets FC was one of the sensations of the season and their fine position was a surprise to many. The club scored 10 goals during their 16 matches. I’ve been able to find the scorer of nine of these goals.

The top scorer of Akwa Starlets FC was Utibe Archibong, who I believe is an attacker. Archibong scored at least three of the 10 goals. Godwin Sunday scored at least two of the goals.

In defence, Akwa Starlets FC has two experienced performers; Kola Awe and Francis Onyegbula. Awe is a utility defender, formerly of Bayelsa United FC and Dolphins FC. Onyegbula has played for JUTH FC and Akwa United FC. Walter Peter is another player with top level experience, formerly of JUTH FC. Nicholas Joseph is an interesting player at left-back.

In midfield, veteran Ochuko Ojobo (born 01.04.1985) is an interesting player. Ojobo played professionally for FK Metalurh Donetsk (Ukraine) in 2005-2006. His former clubs include Dolphins FC and Akwa United FC. Midfielder Johnson Otene was part of the Akwa United FC team that won promotion to the Nigeria Premier League last season. Emmanuel Amah and Joseph Bassey are two other midfielders in the squad.

Other key players include Koko Ekpenyong, Victor Obiowo and Martins Okudili. I have also noticed Udo Etuk and Moroof Salami.

Personally, I won’t be surprised is a couple of the players mentioned plays at top level of Nigerian football next season, most likely for Akwa United FC.

ROGER GOMIS

Roger Gomis of US Gorée could be a player to watch in the future. Gomis is only 17 years old and is currently captaining the Senegal U-20 national football team. Gomis is primarily an attacking midfielder.

My first record of Gomis is from October 2010. At the time, Gomis was playing for Yeggo Foot Pro in Ligue 2, the second level of Senegalese football. Gomis was a regular member of the Senegal U-17 national football team in late 2010 and early 2011. In January 2011, Gomis was part of the Senegal U-17 squad for the 2011 African U-17 Championship in Rwanda. Gomis played all three matches for Senegal U-17 and was also team captain.

After the tournament, in May 2012, Gomis signed for top level side US Gorée. He made his debut in Ligue 1 the same month and he scored his first goal at top level on 17.07.2011 against ASC Diaraf. Gomis played regularly for US Gorée during the second part of the Ligue 1 2010-2011.

Gomis continued to make impressive performances for US Gorée during the Ligue 1 2011-2012. Gomis played regularly but missed some matches because of commitments with the Senegal U-20 national football team. Despite being one of the youngest players in the team, Gomis was recently named as team captain.

According to Transfermarkt, usually a trustworthy website, Gomis is born 05.09.1994.

Gomis is the kind of player that can heavily influence a game. He is a disciplined, hard-working player and a true fighter. Gomis is great in recovering the ball, is strong in the duels and for a teenager, his passing is wonderful. Excellent webpage http://senesport.info has described Gomis as a serious player with great character and personality.

Gomis originates from the Ziguinchor Region in the southern part of Senegal.

ADAMAWA UNITED FC AND AJIROBA-OONI FC

Adamawa United FC is based in Yola in northeastern Nigeria. According to http://www.nigerianationalleague.com/, Adamawa United FC ended the season as number 8 of 9 teams in “Division B” of the Nigeria National League 2012. In other words, the club was relegated and will play at third level of Nigerian football next season. The club scored 19 goals during their 16 matches. I’ve been able to find the scorer of 15 of these goals.

It is very difficult to find information about this team. I know that Tijani Dansabe, Sadiq Lawal and Abubakar Shehu scored at least two goals each. Yakubu Auta (winger), Hamidu Gambo, Isah Garba, Sadiq Lawal, Tunde Oladapo, Azeez Abiola Safaru, Abubakar Shehu, Lukman Surajo and Ismaila Yahaya are other players I have noticed.

AJIROBA-OONI FC

Ajiroba-Ooni FC is based in Ile-Ife in south-western Nigeria. According to http://www.nigerianationalleague.com/, Ajiroba-Ooni FC ended the season at the rock bottom of “Division D” of the Nigeria National League 2012. In other words, the club was relegated and will play at third level of Nigerian football next season. The club scored eight goals during their 16 matches. According to my own statistics, Ajiorba-Ooni FC scored nine goals and I have been able to find the scorer of all these goals.

Yusuf Oyediran is arguably the most interesting player at the club. The young goalkeeper participated for the Nigeria U-20 national football team during the Cape Town U-20 International friendly tournament.

Taiwo Amusan scored two goals during the season. According to Completesportsnigeria, Amusan is a talented 18 year-old youngster who can play in several attacking positions. Amusan is apparently the brother of petit striker Adewale Sunday Amusan, formerly of FC Koper (Slovenia) and currently playing for Wikki Tourists FC.

Funsho Alamayo started the season as the main striker of the team but joined top level side ABS FC in May 2012.

Other players I have noticed are Adekunle Busari, Sunday Ndubuisi, Austin Iluebbey, Saheed Kayode Lasisi, Arowolo Olamide, Shehu Shobayo, Nurudeen Ajibola and Salaudeen Sileola. Shobayo scored two goals during the season.

BENJAMIN FADI

I believe it is fair to say that Benjamin Fadi of Heart of Lions FC is one of the most exciting strikers in the Ghanaian GLO Premier League. Fadi, who finished his first ever season at top level with four goals, is in top form and is currently starring for the Black Satellites, the Ghana U-20 national football team.

According to his own Facebook-page, Fadi is born 16.03.1995. In other words, Fadi is only 17 years old: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003295552796

In March 2012, Fadi was named in the squad of the Ghana U-20 national football team for the first time. Since then, he has cemented his place in the squad.

In May 2012, Fadi was part of the Ghana U-20 team that participated in the Cape Town U-20 International friendly tournament. Fadi scored the winning goal in the opening match against Nigeria, his only goal of the tournament.  The goal was apparently a close range finish.

Earlier this month, Fadi played for Ghana U-20 in the so-called 2012 Accra Three Nations Cup. Fadi scored against Namibia on 08.07.2012 (a header) and against Egypt on 12.07.2012 (a penalty goal).

Currently, Fadi is at a training camp with the Ghana U-20 national football team. Later this month, the Black Satellites will play against Uganda in a qualifier for the African U-20 Championship, to be played in Algeria in 2013. A few days ago, Fadi scored in a practice match against Ghanaian second level team Eleven Wise FC. Fadi is obviously in great form and will most likely lead the attack against Uganda.

Fadi is a great talent and a surprisingly physical player for such a young man. He is strong as a bull and holds up the ball well, creating space and opportunities for his teammates. Fadi works hard, even in matches where he has been hopelessly alone up front, facing rugged central defenders. I have seen Fadi play a couple of times and if he works hard with his finishes, I think he could have a wonderful career.

After the 2012 Accra Three Nations Cup, Fadi was linked to top club Hearts of Oak SC. Personally, I think Fadi could benefit from playing at a club who creates more chances than lowly Heart of Lions FC.

CHARLES EDOA NGA

At the time of writing, Union Douala is leading the Cameroonian MTN Elite One 2012. In this post, I will present Charles Edoa Nga, arguably the most interesting attacker at the club. Edoa Nga is born 17.05.1990. At 22, after three and a half seasons at top level of Cameroonian football, I think he is ready for a new challenge in a bigger league.

My first record of Edoa Nga is from September 2006 and October 2006. The sixteen year old youngster was playing for the Cameroon U-17 national football team against the Central African Republic in two qualifiers for the 2007 African U-17 Championship. I am not sure which club Edoa Nga represented at the time.

In 2007-2008, Edoa Nga was playing for Cintra FC de Yaoundé at third level of Cameroonian football. In May 2008, towards the end of the season, Edoa Nga was named in the squad of the Cameroon U-20 national football team.

Edoa Nga joined Union Douala for the MTN Elite One 2008-2009. He scored two goals during his first season at top level, winning a silver medal. He also gained experience from playing in the 2009 CAF Confederations Cup.

It is almost impossible to find information about the performances of Edoa Nga during the MTN Elite One 2009-2010. Union Douala became number seven in the league. In December 2010, he was picked for the Cameroon B national football team. Edoa Nga scored five goals during the MTN Elite One 2010-2011, enough to make him top scorer at the club. Edoa Nga won a bronze medal as Union Douala ended the season as number three. He continued to play with with the Cameroon B national football team throughout the season.

Edoa Nga has started the current season, the MTN Elite One 2012, at a bright note. At the time of writing, he has scored at least four goals during the first 16 rounds. It seems likely that he has scored one more. Edoa Nga has a great understanding with playmaker Joël Moise Babanda (born 12.01.1980).

Edoa Nga is can play on both flanks or as a striker. I’ve always had a soft spot for this player, who looks quite powerful, is rather quick and has a direct style of play. He is lively and mobile and difficult to defend against. Previously, Edoa Nga has been known for inconsistency, performing brilliantly one day and being almost invisible the next. However, his current form indicates that Edoa Nga has grown as a player and he is widely considered as one of the most dangerous attackers in the league. In February and March 2012, Edoa Nga gained further experience through Union Douala’s participation in the 2012 CAF Confederations Cup.

The following clip shows glimpses of Edoa Nga’s qualities:

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcz99cPldja8QVc2QhN0rig

The following clip shows a goal scored against Canon Yaoundé on 06.03.2011:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9GChwBvebo

Edoa Nga should be able to perform well in a mid-level European league. He is a quite experienced performer at the local scene and his career is definitely pointing upwards. Playing professionally abroad should be a natural next step.

His name is sometimes written “Edoa Ngah”.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE MTN ELITE ONE 2012

* Abed Nego Tembeng is an interesting central defender at Astres Douala. Tembeng, formerly of the Cameroon B and Cameroon U-23 national football team, was signed from Aigle Royal before the current season, and has become an established member of the first team.

* Goalkeeper André Ebode played regularly for the Cameroon U-17 national football team in 2010 and 2011. Ebode, formerly of Sports Etudes from Yaoundé, has now signed for Astres Douala.

* Apparently, Astres Douala is focusing on developing youngsters, often bringing them in from second or third level clubs / amateur clubs. Marius Noubissi is an interesting newcomer, signed from “Ecole de Football Espoir” based in Dschang. Earlier this year, Noubissi was part of the Cameroon U-17 national football team. The youngster has already made his first team debut for Astres Douala.

* Christopher Ayissi (born 25.10.1990) is an attacking midfielder who has forced his way into the first team of Canon Yaoundé. Ayissi, formerly of FC Bamenda, was part of the Cameroon U-20 national football team in 2008 and 2009.

* Briand Eyong Eko (born 24.01.1992) of Canon Yaoundé is another player signed from FC Bamenda. Eko is a tall, athletic right-winger or striker.

* Veteran defender Pierre Wome (born 26.03.1979) of Canon Yaoundé has been a sensation since returning to Cameroon after an eventful career in Europe. Wome, who has played a total of six matches in the FIFA World Cup (1998 and 2002), has scored three goals since joining Canon Yaoundé in March 2012.

* Canon Yaoundé has signed promising goalkeeper Domwa Souaressam who has done well for second-level side Santos de Koza. Souaressam is a tall, commanding goalkeeper, most likely born in 1992. The experienced Junior Djoky (born 12.10.1982) is first-choice goalkeeper at Canon Yaoundé and Souaressam could learn a lot from him.

* Thierry Makon Nloga (born 09.10.1983), the current top scorer in the MTN Elite One 2012 with 10 goals, is apparently on the radar of Tunisian top club Club Africain.

* Jean Landry Bassilekin of Renaissance de Ngoumou scored twice on 22.07.2012 and his total tally is now eight goals in his first ever season at top level of Cameroonian football. Bassilekin is a tall, lanky striker, currently part of the Cameroon U-20 national football team.

* Franck Hemmo Simo, the striker of Sable FC, is kind of a mystery man to me. According to footcameroon.com, Hemmo Simo is a former player of the Kadji Sport Academy and Turkish side Mersin Idmanyurdu SK. I know that a player called “Emo Simo”, mostly referred to as “Ghislain Emo” or “Ghislain Aimé Emo”, born 06.08.1988, played for Mersin Idmanyurdu SK in 2009-2010. Apparently, Emo was signed from the Kadji Sport Academy. I am pretty sure that Franck Hemmo Simo and Ghislain Emo is the same player.

* Gires Tchamake (born 22.07.1990) of Unisport FC is a player that deserves attention. The consistent right-back is a hard fighter who runs for 90 minutes and an excellent reader of the game. Earlier this season, Tchamake was part of the Cameroon B national football team. The picture is of Tchamake and was found on 45fois2.com.

* Watch out for Martin Patrick Yon Loa of Union Douala. The young winger has been a revelation in his first ever season at top level.
