Chima Akas (b. 03.05.1994) is definitely one of the most interesting left-backs in the Nigeria Professional Football League. Akas is blessed with a tremendous left-foot often resulting in pin-point crosses and thunderbolt shots. Akas is well-known for his dangerous free-kicks. Due to his will to attack, Akas is also effective as a left-winger. Akas has been described as an energetic and intelligent player.

Earlier this month, Akas was named in the squad of the Super Eagles, the Nigeria national football team, and the Nigeria U-23 national football team.

Akas played 26 games and scored 2 goals for Sharks FC during the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014, making him first choice at left-back. During mid-season, his place was taken by Yinka Adedeji, but Akas soon returned to the first team. Akas impressed with consistent performances and attacking-minded play. His two goals were both shots with his left-foot, the latter being a free-kick.

However, his European career has never taken off, and Alimi returned to Nigeria in 2014. Alimi made his debut for Sharks FC on 06.08.2014. He featured in 13 games towards the end of the season, and showed that he still has a lot to offer. Alimi could still be heading for a great career.

Obinna Amakor is a speedy attacker who looked quite promising between 2007 and 2010. In 2007, Amakor was part of the U-23 national football team. Apparently, Amakor joined Ghazl Al-Mehalla (Egypt) in 2010 or 2011, but I am not able to confirm this. After 2011, Amakor’s career has unfortunately taken a turn for the worse.

Amakor’s date of birth is currently unknown, but as he was a U-23 player back in 2007, he is most likely in his late twenties.

Amakor played 8-10 games for Nembe City FC during the first part of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014, signing for Sharks FC during the mid-season transfer window. At Sharks FC, Amakor was primarily used as a substitute, featuring in 5 games without impressing.

Tunde Aremu is a versatile midfielder who was a key player for Wikki Tourists FC for several seasons. In February 2009, Aremu was a trialist at Zalaegerszegi TE from Hungary. At the time, he was 20 years old, suggesting Aremu is born in 1989 or 1990.

Aremu played 6 games for Sharks FC during the first stages of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014.He did not feature after 14.05.2014 (Week 12). It’s unclear whether this was because of injury, lack of form, or because he left the club.

Moses Awala is a centre-back who was discovered at the 2012 Governor Amaechi street soccer championship. The following year, Awala featured in almost 30 games during the Nigeria Professional Football League 2013. Awala was also picked for the Nigeria U-20 national football team.

The talented youngster, who I strongly doubt is born 10.08.1990 as untrustworthy webpages suggests, had a difficult time during the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014, primarily because of strong competition from more experienced centre-backs. I also believe Awala was injured during mid-season. Despite playing only 8 games during the season, Awala is definitely a player to watch.

2014 Sharks FC(Nigeria) 1 2 0

Onyii Steve Chiemeka is a central defender. He is big, powerful and good in the air and loves to join the attack when necessary. During the 2012-2013 season, Chiemeka travelled to Malta and played 13 games for Mosta FC. When returning to Nigeria, Chiemeka struggled to get playing time at Sharks FC, as other centre-backs were preferred. Chiemeka had previously formed a strong defensive pair with Alaba Osawa at Sunshine Stars FC, but Chiemeka nevertheless stayed at the bench. Unfortunately, there is some confusion regarding the age of Chiemeka. According to the former homepage of Gateway United FC, Chiemeka is born 02.05.1985. According to 2muchsports and MTN Football, Chiemeka is born 02.05.1987.

Okereke Abraham Ezioha (b. 28.12.1987) is an attacking midfielder with an impressive range of ball skills. The experienced playmaker had a wonderful 2013-season, but struggled during the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014. Ezioha was often found on the bench as younger players were preferred. Ezioha managed only 7 games and 1 goal, a header after a free-kick from left-back Yinka Adedeji. Ezioha will come back stronger.

Tayo Fabiyi is a tall striker who causes a lot of havoc whenever he is playing up front. Fabiyi is surprisingly skilful for such a big man. Unfortunately, Fabiyi is rather ineffective and his goalscoring record will not scare anyone. During the Nigeria Professional Football League, Fabiyi was often used as a substitute, and he started only 8 games. A disappointing season for a player with certain qualities. His only league goal came, not surprisingly, through a header.

John Gaadi (b. 03.03.1982) is a veteran goalkeeper who has featured for at least seven top level sides in Nigeria. However, it’s been a while since the strongman has been first choice. Gaadi was third choice at Sharks FC during the first part of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014, before joining Abia Warriors FC during the mid-season transfer window. Nasiru Hussaini is an attacking midfielder who was part of the Nigeria B national football team back in 2009. At the time, Hussaini looked quite promising and he had a good spell at Kaduna United FC. Expectations were high when he joined Sharks FC during the 2013 mid-season transfer window. Hussaini played regularly after his transfer, but the 2014 season turned out to be rather nightmarish. Hussaini played only 3 games and was primarily found on the bench. He did not feature during the second part of the season, and it is possible that he was released.

Ajani Ibrahim is a quality player who is mostly featured as a striker or winger. Ibrahim is rather small, but has a tremendous work-rate and is blessed with creativity and dribbling skills. Ibrahim was on everyone’s lips after the 2010-2011 season, when he scored 18 league goals. Unfortunately, he has not been effective in front of goal during the last three seasons.

There is some confusion regarding the age of Ibrahim. According to the former homepage of Gateway United FC, Ibrahim is born 05.03.1987. According to MTN Football and 2muchsports, Ibrahim is born 13.05.1990. At Ibrahim’s own Facebook-page, he writes that he is born 03.03.1990.

Ibrahim joined Sharks FC before the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014. Expectations were high at the Port Harcourt-based club. Sharks FC began the season well, and Ibrahim had a couple of impressive matches, although he was ineffective in front of goal. Nevertheless, fans of Sharks FC was sad to see him leave for former club Sunshine Stars FC during the mid-season transfer window. Ibrahim played 15 games (2 goals) for Sharks FC and 12 games (0 goals) for Sunshine Stars FC. Not the season Ibrahim was hoping for.

Christian Ifeanyi Inyam (b, 20.12.1991) is a pacy striker with a healthy work-rate. At 18, after a promising season at Ivorian powerhouse ASEC Mimosas, Inyam joined Swedish top level side Helsingborgs IF, failing to make a single appearance. Since his return to Nigeria, Inyam has struggled to reach his potential. However, the Nigeria Professional Football League 2014 turned out to be a turning point, as Inyam looked quite sharp, especially during the first part of the season. His form dipped towards the end of the season, but Inyam showed that he has the potential to be quite a fox in the box. Inyam has just turned 23 and during the up-coming season, he must show even more.
