WA ALL STARS FC – 2010-2011 SEASON REVIEW

In this post, I will make a statistical presentation of the players of Wa All Stars FC. I will only present a player when I can document (or substantiate) that the player has featured for the club during the GLO Premier League 2010-2011.

Wa All Stars FC became number twelve in the GLO Premier League 2010-2011 and should be considered as a rather modest club. However, Wa All Stars FC is well-known for their ability to develop rather unknown players into exciting prospects.

Wa All Stars FC is based in Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region of Ghana. The club has some very passionate supporters.

The players are presented in alphabetical order. Please note that the opinions are merely subjective and that the statistical information could include some errors. All birthdates can be documented by references to reliable sources.

The picture is of star goalkeeper Robert Dabuo and is taken from waallstars.com.

JAMES KWAME ABBAN

* Abban made his mark in Ghana with an impressive season for Great Olympics in 2009-2010. He failed to score regularly for Wa All Stars FC and joined Liberty Professionals FC in January 2011. He did not score any goals for his new club, despite playing regularly.

* Abban is a very hard-working, strong center forward. However, his finishing has to improve.

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Adinan is a versatile defender who I believe prefers the full-back positions. Adinan has been part of the Ghana U-20 national football team in 2010 and 2011 and is highly regarded at Wa All Stars FC.

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Experienced defender and a former member of the Ghana B national football. Amin played for the Ghana U-17 national football team in 2006, which makes it likely that he is in his early twenties. Arguably one of the best players at the club.

NATHANIEL ASAMOAH

DOB: 22.02.1990

Position: Striker

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

2008-2009           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Asante Kotoko FC(Ghana)

* Asamoah was the star player of Wa All Stars FC for several seasons, including the 2010-2011 season, and he was sorely missed when he joined Asante Kotoko FC in January 2011. Asamoah has been a revelation at Kotoko and has become a fringe player for the Ghana national football team. The speedy attacker was presented in my post from 22.10.2010:

https://westafricanfootball.com/2010/10/22/nathaniel-asamoah/

The following clip shows some of his qualities:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g53bYyavM94

* Boateng forced his way into the first team of Wa All Stars FC during the second part of the season.

* A player called “Samuel Boateng” was playing for the amateur team of Asante Kotoko FC earlier this season, but I am not sure that this is the same player.

ROBERT DABUO

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Dabuo is one of the stars at Wa All Stars FC and has a great reputation in Ghanaian football. Dabuo is a former member of the Ghana U-20 national football team and the Ghana U-17 national football team. He has also been part of the Ghana B national football team during the last couple of years.

2007-2008           Red Bull Academy(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Dadzie, a former member of the Ghana U-17 national football team, failed to grab the number one shirt from Dabuo during the season.

FRANK SARFO GYAMFI

DOB: Unknown

Position: Attacking midfielder / winger

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 7

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Gyamfi has been one of the revelations of the season but it is very difficult to find information about the player. However, during the season I realized that this young man is one of the most important attacking players at Wa All Stars FC and the seven goals he scored made him top scorer at the club.

GODFRED KWAME GYASI

DOB: Unknown

Position: Striker

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but an important member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 2

Career:

2008-2009           Hikari FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Gyasi is another of one of these rather unknown players, almost impossible to track down from a statistician’s point of view, who obviously is about to develop into a quality player. This is rather typical for Wa All Stars FC. Gyasi is a center forward who forced his way into the first team of Wa All Stars FC during the second part of the season.

EDWIN GYIMAH

DOB: 09.03.1991

Position: Defensive midfielder / central midfielder

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Gyimah is one of the key players at Wa All Stars FC and has been a regular member of the Ghana B and the Ghana U-23 national football team during the season. Gyimah is known for shielding the back four, and he also has a good passing range.

ADAMS HAFIZ

DOB: 12.07.1992

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, most likely a fringe player.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Hafiz is an unknown player to me. Apparently a former player of Anokye Stars FC.

TIJANI KOLAWOLE LAWAL

League goals in 2010-2011: 2

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Lawal, a center forward, has been described as a Beninese striker but other sources suggests he is from Nigeria. Lawal is a rather unknown player to me.

LIVINGSTONE LOGOH

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Logoh is the former captain of the Red Bull Academy and one of the key players at Wa All Stars FC.

ERIC MENSAH

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Rather unknown player to me but Mensah has been captaining Wa All Stars FC during the season. I believe he is a central defender.

FATAU OWEN MOHAMMED

DOB: 10.05.1982

Position: Central midfielder

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team before he left the club.

League goals in 2010-2011: 3

Career:

2005                       Real Tamale United FC(Ghana)

2006-2007           Real Tamale United FC(Ghana)

2007-2008           Real Tamale United FC(Ghana)

2008-2009           Real Tamale United FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Real Tamale United FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011            Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Asante Kotoko FC(Ghana)

* The hard-working player, often referred to as “Fatawu Mohammed”, played as a striker earlier in his career, but has grown into a great central midfielder. Mohammed decided to join Asante Kotoko FC in January 2011 and played about 50 percent of the remaining matches for his new club. An interview of Mohammed can be read here:

http://www.asantekotokofc.org/Newreel/2011/000211/fatawu_interview.htm

WAHID MUMUNI

DOB: 07.06.1992

* Rather unknown player to me. According to my sources, Mumuni is a former player of Perrank FC. A “Wahid Abdul Mumuni” from Perrank FC was part of the Ghana U-17 national football team in March 2010, but I am not sure that this is the same player.

ALHASSAN NAWAF

DOB: Unknown

Position: Unknown

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Rather unknown player to me.

SAMUEL OCRAN

DOB: Unknown

Position: Striker

League goals in 2010-2011: 1

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Ocran is an unknown player to me. Not to be confused with Samuel Ocran of El-Gouna(Egypt).

ISAAC OFORI

DOB: Unknown

Position: Attacking midfielder / winger

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown.

League goals in 2010-2011: 1

Career:

2007-2008           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2008-2009           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* A couple of years ago, Ofori was described as one of the star players at Wa All Stars FC, but he has been rather quiet during the GLO Premier League 2010-2011. Ofori was part of both the Ghana U-20 and the Ghana U-17 national football team in 2009, and I believe he is still a teenager.

JOSHUA OTOO

DOB: Unknown

Position: Central defender / left-back

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2007-2008           Red Bull Academy(Ghana)

2008-2009           Red Bull Academy(Ghana)

2010-2011            Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* One of the most exciting prospects at Wa All Stars FC. The talented defender, most likely in his early twenties, is part of the Ghana B national football team, and was previously the big star of the Red Bull Academy. There seem to be a lot of confusion regarding the CV of Otoo and I believe his Wikipedia-article is full of mistakes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Otto

This article seems to be based on the registration of a player called Joshua Opoku (born 04.06.1990) that played for Hearts of Oak SC in 2008-2009. I am 99 percent certain that Opoku is a goalkeeper and a completely different player. As far as I know, Otoo has never played for Hearts of Oak SC and I am 100 percent sure that he has never played an official league match for Hearts of Oak SC. According to the Wikipedia-article, Otoo has played 36 matches for the Ghanaian top club, which is simply incorrect.

* According to several sources, a “Joshua Otoo” played for the Ghana national football team in an international friendly against Argentina on 30.09.2009.

ISSAHAKU SHAIBU

DOB: 02.12.1987

Position: Goalkeeper

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, most likely a fringe player.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2006-2007           Arsenal FC Berekum(Ghana)

2007-2008           Arsenal FC Berekum(Ghana)

2008-2009           Arsenal FC Berekum(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Shaibu, a former regular goalkeeper at Arsenal, is now one of the backup goalkeepers at Wa All Stars FC.

FRANK NORTEY SOWAH

DOB: 06.05.1991

Position: Attacking midfielder / attacker

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 4

Career:

2007-2008           Great Olympics Accra(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Sowah is the playmaker of Wa All Stars FC and one of the most important players at the club.

MOHAMMED SABATO

DOB: 24.12.1989

Position: Defender / defensive midfielder

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team before he left the club.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2006-2007           Nania FC(Ghana)

2007-2008           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2008-2009           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Asante Kotoko FC(Ghana)

* Sabato had been a star player at Wa All Stars FC for several seasons but decided to join Asante Kotoko FC during the January 2011 transfer window. Despite featuring regularly for the Ghana B national football team, Sabato failed to cement his place in the starting eleven at his new club.

An interview of Sabato can be read here:

http://www.asantekotokofc.org/Newreel/2011/000111/sabato_interview.htm

* It is impossible to write about Ghanaian football without making mistakes. I have previously referred to Mohammed Sabato as “Mohammed Yahaya Sabato”. I have also written that Sabato once played for Real Tamale United FC.

This is unfortunately not correct. “Mohammed Sabato” and “Yahaya Sabato” are actually two different players. Yahaya Sabato is a central defender, formerly of Real Tamale United FC and currently playing for Mighty Jets FC.

SEIDU SALIFU

DOB: 02.08.1990

Position: Midfielder

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Salifu, sometimes referred to as “Siedu Salifu”, is a former player of Real Tamale United FC and Real Sportive Tema.

MAJOR BAAH TETTEH

DOB: Unknown

Position: Midfielder

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Rather unknown midfielder who I believe is a former player of FCM Maamobi.

JOSHUA TIJANI

DOB: Unknown

Position: Right-back

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2009-2010           Hasaacas FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* One of the most promising right-backs in the GLO Premier League 2010-2011. Tijani played for the Ghana U-23 national football team during the season.

SEIDU SHAIBU ZIDA

DOB: 05.08.1992

Position: Attacking midfielder / winger

League matches in 2010-2011: unknown, but a key member of the team.

League goals in 2010-2011: 0

Career:

2008-2009           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2009-2010           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

2010-2011           Wa All Stars FC(Ghana)

* Very creative attacking midfielder / playmaker who was part of the Ghana U-20 national football team at the Orange African Youth Championship in South Africa. Arguably the biggest prospect at Wa All Stars FC.

* CAF registered Zida with the date of birth 31.12.1994 before the Orange African Youth Championship. Zida joined Wa All Stars FC before the 2008-2009 season. The Ghana Football Association published a PDF-document at their webpages in 2008, publishing information about newly registered players for the 2008-2009 season. According to this document, Zida is born 08.05.1992.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:

* A player referred to as “Alhassan Weah” played for Wa All Stars FC against Berekum Chelsea FC on 19.01.2011. I am still not sure if this is the same Alhassan Weah that starred for Real Tamale United FC between 2002 and 2009. Weah is a center forward.

* A player called “Albert Gyasi” played for Wa All Stars FC against Medeama SC in MTN FA Cup on 26.06.2011. I am not sure if this player played for the club during the GLO Premier League 2010-2011 and therefore choose not to write about him. Gyasi is apparently a defender.

* Please note that the scorer in the match between Wa All Stars FC and Heart of Lions FC on 18.05.2011 is still unknown.
