OBSERVATIONS FROM THE NIGERIA PREMIER LEAGUE 2010-2011

* Ajani Ibrahim of Sunshine Stars FC is the current top goalscorer in the Nigeria Premier League 2010-2011. According to my statistics, he has scored eight goals so far, although some sources claim the correct number is nine. In any case, his effectiveness is quite impressive for a midfielder.

In February 2011, Ibrahim was named in the squad of the Nigeria U-23 national football team. Both SuperSport and MTN Football describes Ibrahim as a “20 year old” midfielder. I have previously written that Ibrahim is born 05.03.1987, which is a date of birth taken from the former webpage of Gateway FC, now deleted. According to Ibrahim’s Facebook-page his date of birth is 03.03.1990.

Age is often an issue in Nigeria and it is not easy to tell right from wrong. However, it is easy to document that Ibrahim played for Gateway FC against Niger Tornadoes FC on 30.04.2005. It is quite rare that a player who has just turned 15 play in the Nigeria Premier League.

Ibrahim played for Dolphins FC in 2006 and 2007. Ibrahim was training with the Nigeria U-23 national football team during May 2007. He returned to Gateway FC before the 2008-2009 season.  During the season he was transferred to top club Enyimba FC, where he also played in 2009-2010.

I personally find the date of birth 05.03.1987 to be most probable and will continue to use this date of birth in the continuance.

* Striker Kabiru Sanusi of Kwara United FC is currently on fire, having scored 5 goals in the last 7 matches. Sanusi scored only once during 2009-2010 but still got included in the squad of the Nigeria B national football team during 2010. According to unconfirmed sources, Sanusi was top goalscorer for Kwara United FC in 2008-2009, when the team won promotion to the Nigeria Premier League. He is apparently a former player for Ranchers Bees FC. Sanusi was a trialist at IK Start(Norway) before the 2010-2011 season, but failed to get a contract.

* Brendan Ogbu is one of the most interesting strikers in Nigeria, but it is still almost impossible to find information about the Enugu Rangers FC youngster. According to my statistics, Ogbu scored two goals for Rangers in 2008-2009 and one goal in 2009-2010. He already has four goals to his name during the current campaign. Ogbu was part of the Nigeria U-20 national football team in January 2011. Ogbu has been a key performer for Rangers this season and described as a speedy marksman.
