Sheriff Isa (born 10.11.1990), the promising midfielder of Kano Pillars FC, first made headlines in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, played in South Korea. Isa starred for the Nigeria U-17 national football team, participating in six of Nigeria’s seven matches. Isa scored two goals against Haiti on 25.08.2007 and one goal against Colombia on 30.08.2007. Nigeria U-17 eventually won the tournament. Isa got rave reviews and was tipped to stardom by many experts.

At the time of the tournament, Isa was only 16 years old and attending the Sultan Atiku Secondary School in Sokoto, a city located in the northwest of Nigeria. Isa had previously starred in the so-called Shell Cup, the All-Nigeria Secondary Schools Soccer Competition and had caught the eye of the officials of Nigeria U-17.

2008 was a rather quiet year for Isa. According to unconfirmed reports, he was travelling the world for trials at different clubs. In February 2009, Isa was training with Vålerenga IF, one of the biggest clubs in Norway. According to the official homepage of Vålerenga IF, Isa was part of the Crystal Soccer Academy at the time, most likely a reference to the Global Crystal Academy where for instance Lukman Haruna (AS Monaco, France) started his career.

In May 2009, Isa played for the Nigeria U-20 national football team in a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago. Isa was not part of the Nigeria U-20 national football team for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, played in Egypt in July 2009.

Sheriff Isa signed for Kano Pillars FC before the 2009-2010 season. Isa was fairly regular and a consistent performer during his first season in the Nigeria Premier League. Isa scored one league goal, against Gateway FC in Round 31 of the campaign. During the season, Isa was training with the Nigeria B national football team.

Isa has made a very promising start to the on-going Nigeria Premier League 2010-2011, scoring two goals during the first 16 rounds of football. On 30.01.2011, Isa scored for Pillars against Mighty Barrolle (Liberia) in the qualifying rounds for the 2011 CAF Champions League.

Isa has recently been training with the Nigeria B national football team and a few days ago, Isa was named in the squad of the Nigeria U-23 national football team. Isa will be hoping for a chance to play for Nigeria U-23 in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Sheriff Isa a versatile player, comfortable as a midfielder or as an attacker. He is often used as a hard-working and tricky left-winger.

Although being only 20 years old, Isa has experienced a lot, including winning the U-17 World Cup in 2007. Isa has been involved with Nigeria B, Nigeria U-23 and Nigeria U-20 and has recently caught the eye of Samson Siasia, the coach of the Nigeria national football team. Isa is also a key player for Kano Pillars FC, one of the best teams in the country.

Based on the above, I think Isa is one of the most interesting prospects in the Nigeria Premier League.

The name of Sheriff Isa is often misspelled. His first name is sometimes written “Sharif”, “Sherif” or “Sherriff”, while his surname is sometimes written “Isah”.
