Strong striker Raheem Isiaka Owolabi, mostly referred to as Raheem Owolabi, has been a revelation for Shooting Stars FC so far this season, scoring goals against Bukola Babes FC on 20.11.2010 and against Plateau United FC on 12.12.2010. According to most sources, Owolabi also scored a goal on 14.11.2010 against Zamfara United FC, but some sources gives the credit to his experienced competitor Kabiru Alausa (born 28.03.1983).

Owolabi joined Shooting Stars FC from First Bank FC, a second division side from Lagos. In 2007-2008, Owolabi played for another second division side called ONELGA FC from Port Harcourt.

The first time I noticed Owolabi was in February 2008, when he was named in the preliminary squad for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Owolabi did not make the final squad, but the inclusion was nevertheless a sign of quality.

Owolabi has his own webpage at According to the webpage, Owolabi is 180 centimeters and 67 kilos. He apparently prefers his right foot and describes himself as a “strong and skilful attacking player with vision”, which is also good in the air and has “great passing, dribbling and shooting ability”. More objective sources also mentions his strenght as one of his forces.

There seem to be some confusion regarding his age. According to the official webpage of Shooting Stars FC, Owolabi is born 14.06.1991. According to his profile at SoccerMercato, Owolabi is born 14.06.1990. As mentioned above, Owolabi was included in the preliminarly squad for the Beijing Olympics in February 2008. The Men’s Olympic Football Tournament is for U-23 players and it seems somewhat questionable that a 16 year old player was included in such a squad. However, nothing is impossible in Nigerian football.

Raheem Owolabi is part of a brilliant attacking trio at Shooting Stars FC – including Owolabi, Kabiru Alausa and the youthful Fuad Gbolahan Salami, who I profiled on 13.11.2010. As far as I know, this is the first season at top level for Owolabi and based on his impressive start to the season, he is obviously one to watch.
