SPECIAL REPORT – TALENTS FROM THE DIAMBARS ACADEMY

At the time of writing, the Diambars football academy in Senegal is arguably one of the most exciting of the many football academies in Africa. Diambars was co-established by several former professional footballers, including Patrick Vieira, Bernard Lama and Jean-Marc Adjovi-Boco. The academy is participating at second level in the Senegalese football league, the so-called Ligue 2, where the club is often referred to as Diambars de Saly. The academy is based in Diourbel.

For the last couple of years, Diambars-players have dominated the youth international sides of Senegal, especially Senegal U-20 but also Senegal U-17. Some of these are now playing in Europe.

Towering defensive midfielder Sérigne Modou Kara Mbodj (born 11.11.1989) and left-back / central defender Saliou Ciss (born 15.09.1989) are both at Tromsø IL, currently third in the Norwegian top league. Kara has been a revelation and is apparently on the radar of several Premier League-clubs, including Arsenal FC. Ciss is not a regular in the side but has impressed when given the chance. Striker Mignane Diouf (born 01.02.1989) is currently on loan at Tromsø but has so far not broken trough at the first team. French top-side Lille OSC has three former Diambars-players in it’s squad. Striker Omar Wade (born 15.05.1990) and midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye (born 26.09.1989) has already made their debuts for the first-team in the Ligue 1 as well as in the UEFA Europe League, while defender Pape Ndiaye Souare (born 06.06.1990) is primarily used at the reserve-team. All three players are highly regarded. Papa Alassane Ndiaye (born 30.12.1990) is a defender for Le Havre AC.

It is more than likely that this well-run academy in Senegal will produce a lot more players to European clubs in the future. I will therefore give a short presentation on  some of the current Diambars-players that could very well be heading for a bright future in football.

OUSSEYNOU BOYE

The first time I noticed talented striker Ousseynou Boye was in the so-called Norway Cup in 2007, one of the biggest youth-tournaments in football. Boye was playing for the Diambars-team for 14 year olds, which should imply that he now is 17 or 18 years of age. Boye scored two goals in the final of the tournament. Boye has been a regular in the squads of Senegal U-20 I 2010 and in July 2010, he scored a brilliant goal for Senegal U-20 against Morocco in a qualifier for the Orange African Youth Championship in Libya, being held in 2011. As far as I know, Boye is a typical goal-poacher with tremendous potential.

Ndao is a hard running midfielder who makes provides an important platform for the more attacking players. Well-known for precise passes and great vision. Ndao’s mother is actually from Morocco.

JOSEPH ROMARIC LOPY

Lopy is a defensive midfielder, arguably one of the biggest talents in Senegalese football. Trialist at French club Sochaux in August / September 2010. He was part of Senegal U-17 back in 2007 and is now a regular for the Senegal U-20. Probably about 19 years of age.

MAMADOU NDAW

Ndaw is the regular right-back of Diambars, born 29.10.1990. Member of Senegal U-20 in 2008 and 2009. He is apparently 179 centimeters and 63 kilos. Sometimes referred to as Mamadou Ndao.
