One of the obvious problems of Nigerian football is the lack of statistics and trustworthy information. In this post and the next four posts I will publish lists of scorers from the Nigeria Football League 2009-2010 that was finished in July 2010. Please notice that these statistics are extremely difficult to quality-check and it is therefore highly probable that there are errors to be found. There are also several goals scored where the goalscorer is unknown.

I am also writing basic information about the players. However, there are several players listed that are unknown to me. Should anyone need documentation for what am I writing – please let me know.


8 goals – Mannir UBALE – talented striker who’s scored 16 goals in the Nigeria Premier League during the three last seasons. Apparently signed for Egyptian side MCDR before 2010-2011. Born 02.07.1991 according to reliable Egyptian website Was part of the Flying Eagles, Nigeria U-20, during 2008.  

5 goals – Andrew MICHAEL – a strong striker born 04.08.1992 who came up the ranks of Bayelsa United FC, scoring two goals in his debut season in 2008-2009.

5 goals – Osas OKORO – stocky striker who is an older brother of Stanley Okoro at Almeria, Spain. Was part of both Nigeria U-20 in 2008 and 2009 and Nigeria U-23 during 2008. 

3 goals – Stanley OHAWUCHI – petit striker born 27.05.1990 who participated for Nigeria U-20 during the U-20 World Cup in 2009. Scored 14 goals for Bayelsa United FC in 2008-2009. Apparently, several top clubs in Nigeria are interested in the talented Ohawuchi.

2 goals – Gbemi AKINROLABU – left winger, formerly of Sunshine Stars FC.

2 goals – Chibuzor OKONWKO – gifted player who can play at both right-back and left-back. One full international cap for Nigeria. Born 16.12.1988.

2 goals – Bernard OKOROWANTA – versatile midfielder who played for Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Israel) in 2005-2006 and Sivaspor (Turkey) in 2007-2008. Born 11.12.1986. Was part of Nigeria U-23 in 2008.

2 goals – Waheed Popoola ROTIMI – burly striker born 22.04.1990.

2 goals – Gege SORIOLA – central defender or defensive midfielder, born 21.11.1988. Former JUTH FC. Was part of the Nigeria preliminary squad for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

1 goal – Emmanuel EBIEDE – veteran midfielder, born 27.03.1976. Played professionally in several countries, including the Netherlands (SC Heerenveen), the United Arab Emirates (Al-Jazeera, Al-Ain) and Israel (MS Ashdod). A couple of full international matches for Nigeria.

1 goal – Jerome EZOBA – experienced central defender. Former Rangers International FC and Enyimba FC.

1 goal – Nnana GBAKWARA – talented and powerful midfielder, born 13.05.1992 according to my sources. Was named in the preliminary Nigeria-squad for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

1 goal – Tarilaye NWANKWE – experienced defender who is often named as captain of the side.

1 goal – Martins OKPOSE – right-winger and a product of the club’s youth program.

1 goal – Diri OTIMOTI – striker who was part of Nigeria U-20 in 2005.

1 goal – Ebimobowei PETERS – young attacker who came up the ranks of Bayelsa United FC, scoring one goal in his debut season in 2008-2009.

Two goals are missing – one goal against Warri Wolves FC in Round 27 and one goal against Sunshine Stars in Round 33.


9 goals – Captain EJINDU – impressive striker who is reportedly on the radar of Enyimba FC. Former Sharks FC of Port Harcourt.

4 goals – Emma NWACHI – widely regarded as one of the best strikers in Nigerian football the last seasons, scoring 9 goals for Sharks FC in 2007-2008 and 6 goals for Bayelsa United FC in 2008-2009. Regular member of Nigeria B. Born 12.10.1986. Has apparently just signed for Heartland FC.

4 goals – Joseph Obinna NWAFOR – big striker born 05.05.1983. Played professionally in Cyprus, Greece and Israel. Scored 5 goals for OFI Kreta in 2007-2008.

3 goals – Obinna AMAKOR – striker who was top goalscorer for Dolphins when they were promoted in 2008-2009. Was part of Nigeria U-23 in 2007, then playing for Akwa United FC.

2 goals – Abdul AJAGUN – winger or attacking midfielder, born 10.02.1993. Arguably one of the most talented players in Nigerian football. Played for Nigeria U-20 against Mauritius U-20 on 26.09.2010.

2 goals – Sunday MBA – attacking midfielder born 28.11.1988. Very creative and key-player for Dolphins. Has played for both Nigeria U-17, Nigeria U-20 and Nigeria B.

2 goals – Salisu YUSUF – experienced midfielder. Former Kaduna United FC, Sharks FC, Gombe United FC and Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC.

1 goal – Danjuma ABDULLAHI – veteran striker, formerly of Gombe United FC and Plateau United FC.

1 goal – Jonah ABUTU – tall and strong attacking midfielder born 27.07.1988. Scored 9 goals for Sharks FC of Port Harcourt in 2007-2008 and 2 goals for Bayelsa United FC 2008-2009. One of the key players for Dolphins last season.

1 goal – Owusu ADDAI – striker from Ghana. Scored 3 goals for Heartland FC in 2008-2009, but mostly used as substitute. Played for Liberty Professionals FC in Ghana in 2007-2008.

1 goal – Victor BABAYARO – right-back who has been with Dolphins for several years.

1 goal – Solomon BITRUS – midfielder, formerly of Zamfara United FC.

1 goal – Osita ECHENDU – defender, born 04.02.1987. Played for Nigeria in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2007.

1 goal – EZOBA – the goalscorer against Bayelsa United FC in Round 30 is unknown to me.

1 goal – Emma GODWIN – experienced defender, born 11.11.1982. Has been with Dolphins for several years.

1 goal – John HUAN – strong striker who scored 7 goals for Sharks FC of Port Harcourt in 2007-2008 and 3 goals in 2008-2009. Joined Dolphins during 2009-2010.

1 goal – Uche OGUCHI – right-back born 19.09.1987. Played two matches for Nigeria A in 2007. Former Enyimba FC and Lobi Stars FC. Has recently joined Enugu Rangers International FC according to reliable sources.

1 goal – Omoh OJABU – striker born 14.12.1992 who has figured regularly for Nigeria U-20. Considered as a major talent in Nigerian football.

1 goal – Charles OKORO – reserve striker, former Sharks FC and Gabros International FC.

1 goal – Chidi OSUCHUKWU – sleeky striker born 16.02.1990. Former Gateway FC, where he scored 5 goals in 2008-2009. Member of Nigeria U-20 during 2009.

1 goal – Own Goal in Round 22 against Shooting Stars FC


12 goals – Osamudiamen IDEHEN – the star striker of Enyimba FC, born 13.05.1990. Known for his tireless running and ability to get in behind the defence. Trialist at Brøndby (Denmark) this summer. Scored two goals for the Super Eagles in his full international debut against DR Congo on 03.03.2010.

5 goals – Junior OSAGIE – aggressive center forward, born 15.01.1985. Formerly of Club Africain (Tunisia) and Enugu Rangers International FC.

3 goals – Philip AUTA – extremely fast attacker. Former Wikki Tourists FC. Trialist at Helsingborgs IF (Sweden) in the winter of 2008.

3 goals – Chidozie JOHNSON – experienced midfielder born 06.03.1983. Former Sunshine Stars FC, Akwa United FC and Wikki Tourists FC. Widely considered as one of the best midfielders in Nigerian football the last ten years.

2 goals – Sakibu ATANDA – striker born 20.03.1988 who played for Ismaily(Egypt) in 2006-2007.

2 goals – Daddy BAZUAYE – midfielder Daddy Bazuaye will soon be 22 years old (born 11.12.1988) and deserves attention, having performed well for Enyimba FC for several seasons. Bazuaye was part of the Super Eagles-squad for the match against Guinea earlier this month.

2 goals – Reuben GABRIEL – towering central midfielder Reuben Gabriel, former Kaduna United FC, showed great passing abilities during the season and was considered for the Super Eagles in July, as well as being a regular for Nigeria B during the season. Gabriel has apparently signed for Kano Pillars FC. Was part of Nigeria U-20 in 2008.

2 goals – Magnus IWUOHA – a coming man in Nigerian football. Talented striker.

2 goals – Uche KALU – quality striker who has been plagued with injuries since he in 2007 was named as “Most Valuable Player” in the Nigerian Premier League.

2 goals – Josiah MADUABUCHI – attacking midfielder, born in 1988, who is central in the attacking play of Enyimba. Can also play as a right-winger. Part of Nigeria B in 2007 and 2008.

2 goals – Valentine NWABILI – Nwabili is Enyimba’s top-performer at left-back. Nwabili made his full international debut for Nigeria against South Korea on 11.08.2010. Nwabili has a cultured left-foot and is well-known for his overlapping runs and tremendous work-rate. Nwabili has previously played for Espérance Sportive de Tunis from the Tunisian capital.

1 goal – Jacob AIKHIONBARE – striker born 21.10.1984 who is now playing in Thailand for Thai Port Bangkok.

1 goal – Ajani IBRAHIM – midfielder, born 05.03.1987. Formerly of Gateway FC and Dolphin FC of Port Harcourt.

1 goal – Cletus ITODO – experienced central midfielder.

1 goal – Peter ONOJA – talented midfielder, formerly of Kaduna United FC.

1 goal – Chinedu UDOJI – coming man who finished his first season at Enyimba FC.

1 goal – Own Goal in Round 30 against Niger Tornadoes FC.


5 goals – Seun AFOLABI – talented central defender born 05.04.1989.

5 goals – Abiodun KAYODE – powerful winger born 06.11.1992. Highly regarded and will probably sign for a bigger club soon. Trialist at Aalesunds FK (Norway) this summer.

4 goals – Chidinma OSEMENE – playmaker blessed with good technique, born 01.12.1990.

2 goals – Jide OLAFIMIHAN – unknown player to me.

2 goals – Innocent TIMOTHY – unknown player to me, apparently signed from Lobi Stars FC.

1 goal – Emmanuel AGBO – forward, formerly of Lobi Stars FC.

1 goal – Timothy AWOTALE – defender, member of Nigeria U-20 in 2004.

1 goal – COLLINS – the goalscorer against Ocean Boys FC in Round 18 is unknown to me.

1 goal – Abel EBIFEMI – signed from Warri Wolves FC before 2009-2010.

1 goal – Gift EZEJI – unknown player to me.

1 goal – Michael EZEKIEL – unknown player to me.

1 goal – Luther JAMES – burly and skilful striker loaned from Lobi Stars FC. James is now playing for Soleil FC in Benin and was named in the full international squad of Benin earlier this month.

1 goal – Sam LEDOR – attacking midfielder born in 1983. Was brought to Gateway FC from Lobi Stars FC, to provide the platform behind the inexperienced frontal crew.

1 goal – Ebube OKPOKWU – striker, formerly of Akwa United FC.

1 goal – OLUFEMI – the goalscorer against Enyimba FC in Round 33 is unknown to me.

1 goal – Chidi OSUCHUKWU – talented striker who signed for Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt in the middle of 2009-2010.

1 goal – SULEIMAN – the goalscorer against Kaduna United FC in Round 16 is unknown to me.

1 goal – Own Goal against Bayelsa United FC in Round 28.

Two goals are missing – one goal against Warri Wolves FC in Round 29 and one goal against Sunshine Stars in Round 37.
