Cotonsport FC de Garoua, the most successful club in Cameroon the last 10 years, has earned a reputation for producing exciting talent. 19-year old Jacques Zoua, who made several impressive performances during 2008-2009, signed for FC Basel in Switzerland. Brice Owona, 21 years old, scored 7 league goals in the first half of 2009-2010 and signed for FC St. Gallen in February 2010. Their top goalscorer in 2009-2010, 18-yeard old striker Vincent Aboubakar, signed for Valenciennes FC in France in May 2010 and has since established himself in the squad of “The Indomitable Lions” (the Cameroon national football team).

I am personally pretty confident that young winger / attacker Edgard Salli will be the next player from Cotonsport to sign a professional contract for a club in a bigger league. Edgard Salli is born 17.08.1992 which makes him 18 years old at the time of writing.

Although Cotonsport FC de Garoua arguably is the best team in Cameroon, it is difficult to find information about the club, being based in the North Province of Cameroon. I am able to document 5 league goals for Salli during the 2009-2010 season but he has most likely scored a couple more. Salli was also part of the Cotonsport-squad for the 2010 Confederations Cup.

Edgard Salli signed for Cotonsport short time before the 2009-2010 season and became league champion in his first season. In 2008-2009, Salli played for second division side Ngaoundéré FC, not to be confused with top division side Ngaoundéré University FC. Ngaoundéré FC was actually relegated from the second divison after the 2008-2009 season. I am able to document that Salli scored at least two of the 10 league-goals of his club during the season.

The name of Edgard Salli is commonly misspelled. Some of the versions to be found is “Edgard Sally” and “Edgar Sali”. His full name is actually Edgard Nicaise Constant Salli.

Salli is a lively attacker, clever in front of goal and known for being extremely fast. He is small in stature but compensates with precise passes and the ability to dribble while being at high speed. He is mostly used as a winger but can also play as a central striker. Salli has already scored for the B-team of Cameroon, against Congo on 27.03.2010 in a qualifier for the so-called CHAN-tournament. He was part of the Cameroon-squad for the 2010 CEMAC-tournament, but did not score any goals.

He has represented Cameroon U-20 several times during 2009 and 2010, and was named in their last squad a couple of weeks ago.

Since his transfer to Cotonsport, Salli has taken some gigantic steps, establishing himself at the best club side in Cameroon, impressing in the top league, making his way to the B-side of Cameroon despite his young age, and becoming one of the stars of the Cameroon U-20. This player will be going somewhere and I personally think it will happen soon.

  1. Thank you for this fine report! I find the given information interesting and useful. I already created his profile ( I personally love this player. Hope, you will publish all the squad of 2010/11 season like you did with FC Dolphins.
