OBSERVATIONS FROM THE CAMEROONIAN MTN ELITE ONE 2013

yedan* Astres de Douala looks interesting this season. Goalkeeper Hugo Nyamé (born 16.04.1986) and centre-back Geremi Sagong (born 20.07.1986) have returned to the club after a stint with US Bitam of Gabon. Both are quality players who know what the MTN Elite One is all about. Nyamé will face strong competition from Yannick Epane for the number one shirt, while Sagong will have to fight off youngster Thomas Junior Libiih, a new signing from Renaissance de Ngoumou, and Abed Nego Tembeng (born 13.09.1991). Other interesting newcomers include defender Marc Eric Mbia and Paterson Ajong Fogha from Njalla Quan Sport Academy, midfielder Souleymanou Njayou Moulioum from YOSA, Camille Kamdem Kamdem from Renaissance de Ngoumou, an attacking midfielder with a bright future, and young striker Yann Junior Abianda, signed from AS Fortuna Yaoundé. Last season, Abianda scored regularly at third level of Cameroonian football. Abianda also trained with the Cameroon U-20 national football team.

Enterprising winger Roméo Yem Yem (born 13.06.1990) has returned to Astres de Douala after one season at neighbours New Star de Douala. Yem Yem has scored two goals during the first three matches of season.

Full-back Jean Patrick Abouna Ndzana (born 27.09.1990) and left-winger Joseph Julien Momasso (born 09.12.1985) are arguably the biggest stars in the squad. Ernest Nsombo (born 06.03.1991) and Alex Ngamou (born 15.01.1990), signed from Unisport FC, are the main strikers at the club and they will have a big responsibility on their young shoulders.

According to unconfirmed sources, Astres de Douala has also signed star midfielder Marcellin Ngando Mbiala (born 27.02.1989) from Unisport FC, defensive midfielder Isaac Tatchoum (born 29.08.1982) from Panthère Sportive, and powerful striker Valentin Bertrand Biloa (born 12.06.1988) from Unisport FC.

* Francois Beyokol (born 12.03.1989), the “forgotten goalkeeper” who looked extremely promising five years ago, has returned to Canon de Yaoundé. Beyokol will most likely be first choice between the sticks this season.

Canon de Yaoundé is still captained by the legendary Pierre Wome (born 26.03.1979), mostly found in the defence. Paul Mvondo Atangana, who has recently trained with the Cameroon B national football team, is another key defender. Jacques Onana Ndzomo, a right-back or centre-back, is a promising defender who plays regularly for the Cameroon U-20 national football team.

After three rounds of the league, attacking midfielder Alioum Alhadji Bouba, signed from Astres de Douala before the season, already has two goals to his name.

Striker Dieudonné Evina Manga (born 22.12.1991) is a great signing from Astres de Douala. Evina Manga and the interesting striker Victor Mengue, signed from third level side FC 2000X Mimboman, should be able to score goals this season. On 24.02.2013, Evina Manga scored his first goal for his new club.

Yaya Zoua Dambe, signed from Scorpion FC de Mbe, is another player to watch. I believe Zoua Dambe is the younger brother of enterprising striker Jacques Zoua of FC Basel in Switzerland.

* Cotonsport FC is a side packed with quality players. Goalkeeper Loic Maxime Feudjou (born 14.04.1992) is first choice and a star in the making. Red hot defender Dakonam Djene (born 31.12.1991) excelled at left-back for Togo during the 2013 African Cup of Nations. At Cotonsport FC, he is often found on right-back as Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo (born 22.06.1991) seems to be preferred at the left-back position.

The towering Bouba Aminou is definitely a player to watch. The versatile Aminou, who is about to force his way into the squad of “Les Lions Indomptables”, is primarily a centre-back but is also comfortable in a holding midfield role or at left-back.

Jean Jules Bapidi Fils (born 22.06.1991) and Stéphane Kingué Mpondo (born 02.06.1985) are both hard-working and hard-tackling midfielders with a lot of power and strength.

Jusly Gitel Boukama Kaya (born 05.02.1993) from the Republic of the Congo is a talented winger. Youngster Nicolas Brice Moumi Ngamaleu, signed from Canon de Yaoundé, should be watched closely in the continuance.

Last season, pacy attacker Charles Etoundi Eloundou (born 04.12.1994) was a sensation at Unisport FC. Eloundou is currently playing at Cotonsport FC but according to unconfirmed sources he will soon travel to the United States and top level side Colorado Rapids. Emmanuel Mbongo Ewangue (born 13.03.1993), the athletic, lively attacker, scored two goals against Panthère Sportive on 24.02.2013.

As always, Cotonsport FC has signed interesting players from other West African countries, namely attacker Natabi Traoré from Benin and attacking midfielder / left-winger Moussa Yedan (born 20.07.1989) from Burkina Faso. The picture, found on http://www.fasosport.com, is of Yedan.
