Petit striker Koelly Kevin Zougoula of Séwé Sport de San Pedro has scored 30 goals during the last three seasons of the Ivorian MTN Ligue 1, making him the most consistent goalscorer in the country. Last month, Séwé Sport de San Pedro won their first ever championship title and Zougoula’s 10 goals during the season proved to be decisive.
Zougoula started his career at Sabé Sport de Bouna before he joined amateur club AS AGIR Guibéroua. He made few headlines until he teamed up with top level side ASC Ouragahio. Zougoula scored nine goals during the MTN Ligue 1 2010 and after the season, he was rewarded with a place in the Ivory Coast B national football team.
In January / February 2011, Zougoula played for Séwé Sport in the 2011 CAF Confederations Cup, gaining valuable experience despite his team being knocked out by AshantiGold SC (Ghana) during the preliminary round.
In February 2011, Zougoula played for Ivory Coast B during the 2011 African Nations Championship in Sudan. Ivory Coast B got eliminated during the group stage and Zougoula failed to get on the scoresheet. After the tournament, Zougoula joined the ambitious Séwé Sport de San Pedro and he scored 11 goals during the MTN Ligue 1 2011; five goals during the first stage and six goals during the “Superdivision L1”. Towards the end of the season, Zougoula caught the eye of Francois Zahoui, the head coach of Les Éléphants, the Ivory Coast national football team. As far as I know, Zougoula participated in some training sessions in late 2011.
After the season, Zougoula was rewarded with a place in the official “Equipe type” (Team of the season) of the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football. Zougoula was also crowned as the “Meilleur buteur” (Top scorer) of the MTN Ligue 1 2011.
Zougoula was able to maintain the top scorer status for the MTN Ligue 1 2012. He scored three goals during the first stage of the league and another seven goals during “Superdivision L1”. Zougoula’s performances seem to improve drastically during the Superdivision-stage, suggesting that he is a man for the big matches against good opposition; perhaps because playing against better teams allows Séwé Sport to focuse more on counter-attack play.
In Februar 2012, Zougoula played for Séwé Sport in the 2012 CAF Confederations Cup. His team was yet again knocked out during the preliminary round, this time by Unisport FC (Cameroon).
Zougoula is primarily a striker but he is also comfortable on the wings. According to trustworthy sources, Zougoula is 165 or 166 centimeters. He is well-known for his pace, hard-work and unpredictability. Zougoula always has a trick up his sleeve and he is extremely difficult to defend against when he uses his speed and skills effectively. Zougoula has developed smartness in front of goal and he is a clinical finisher. His small stature could scare of potential buyers but make no mistake; the Ivorian league is very tough and filled with rugged and tough defenders.
There seems to be some confusion regarding the age of Zougoula as the official homepage of the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football presents two different birthdates: 20.03.1984 and 20.04.1988:
The latter birthdate is found on the official homepage of the Confederation of African Football: http://www.cafonline.com/userfiles/file/CIV.pdf
