The MTN Elite One, the top division of football in Cameroon, started last weekend. The top match was Astres Douala vs Cotonsport FC, a match that ended 2-4. Midfielder Clarence Bitang, often referred to as Clarence Junior Bitang, made an impressive performance for Astres. Although Bitang is very inexperienced and apparently only 17 years old, he is undoubtedly a player to watch in Cameroonian football.
My first record of Bitang was in March 2010, when he forced his way into the starting eleven for Astres Douala, an ambitious team with economic muscles. As far as I know, Bitang made his debut for Astres in the second half of the season, most likely in February 2010.
On 04.04.2010, Bitang scored his first goal for Astres, against Matelots Douala in Round 20. As far as I know, this was his only goal of the season.
In May 2010, Bitang was included in the squad of Cameroon U-20. Since then, he has been an important member of the team. He usually wears the shirt 10 for the national team. On 24.10.2010, Cameroon U-20 confirmed their place at the Libya 2011 Orange Africa Youth Championship, beating Congo 2-0. According to Camfoot, Bitang was the best player of the match (together with Franck Kom). A few days later, Bitang played for Astres against Fovu Baham in the Final of Coupe du Cameroun. Astres lost the match 1-2.
Clarence Bitang is described as an attacking midfielder with excellent skills and vision. Some of his qualities are clearly shown in the following video:
Clarence Bitang is sometimes referred to as “Clarence Batang”.
