It is fair to say that a few eyebrows were raised yesterday when the powerful defender of Kano Pillars FC, Abdulwasiu Showemimo, was named in the Super Eagles-squad for the friendly against Iran on 17.11.2010 in Teheran. Showemimo has never before featured for the Super Eagles. In fact, as far as I know, he has never been named in any Nigeria-squad – including Nigeria-B-, Nigeria U-23, Nigeria U-20 and Nigeria U-17. It is nevertheless a fact that Showemimo is a brilliant central defender and an important member of top-side Kano Pillars FC – the club that became second best in 2009-2010 and that many, including myself, think will be a strong contender for the 2010-2011 championship. Showemimo was sometimes named as captain of the side during 2009-2010 and performed well for his side at the 2009 African Champions League. He was however struggling with a knee problem during 2009 but this looks to have been resolved.
Abdulwasiu Showemimo is born 10.10.1988 and has therefore just turned 22 years old. Little is known about the past of Showemimo. As far as I know he joined Pillars before 2008-2009, winning the Nigerian Premier League in his debut season. Apparently he played for Gateway FC from Abeokuta before joining the club from the northern part of Nigeria.
As far as I know he has never scored a goal in the Nigerian Premier League.
Showemimo is surprisingly skillful for being a central defender. He is also described as a hard-working, solid defender with great leaping power.
Showemimo is often referred to as Wasiu Showemimo and uses the name “Wasiu” at his shirt.
According to several sources, Showemimo is already on the radar of European clubs. If he should get his full international debut against Iran, it seems likely that he will leave the Nigerian Premier League at the next transfer window.
